Purpose

This class will introduce you to the key elements you and your students need to know to help you accomplish your clinical, research, and educational goals.

Scopus is an interdisciplinary citation database of peer‐reviewed literature, featuring smart tools to track, analyze and visualize research. Journal and author metrics are used to try to quantify the research impact of a publication or authors work. Referred to as the impact factor, these calculations attempt to provide context for the scientific importance,  or relevance of a journal or of a researcher's publication.

Learning Objectives

By the end of class participants will be able to independently explain key concepts and/or perform the following skills as indicated by the observation of the instructor and student’s self‐assessment:

  1. Define Metrics in the context of Journal impact factor and article level/citation impact factor.
  2. Demonstrate how to build an effective search for journals, authors, and institutions.
  3. Practice saving your search results and search strategies in My List and My Scopus.
  4. Identify how to locate further training materials from the DMU library at http://lib.dmu.edu/db/scopus as well as from Elsevier at http://www.journalmetrics.com/about‐scopus.php.
