Educational Need
According to the Fiscal Year 2022 Annual Report on Sexual Assault in the Military, there were 7,378 reports of sexual assault against service members in 2022. This is a 1% increase from 2021. In 2021, a confidential survey estimated that 35,900 active-duty service members experienced unwanted sexual contact. Of those, 19,300 were women and 16,600 were men.
The rate of sexual assault and rape increased by almost 40% from 2016 to 2018. Sexual assault reports increased in the Air Force and Navy but decreased in the Army. The Marine Corps had the highest percentage of women experiencing unwanted sexual contact, with 13.4%. The reporting rate has fallen significantly since the last survey in 2018, when the reporting rate was 30%. In 2016, only 13% of cases where the military could take action were prosecuted.
