Educational Need

It is well-known that patient-centered interactions in health care promote adherence to treatment plans and improved outcomes. Providing patient-centered care requires providers to involve patients in their health care decisions and empower them to live healthier lives. However, there is only so much that a provider can do from their medical office, and success ultimately falls on the shoulders of the patient to ensure they adhere to the treatment plan.

It can feel impossible to keep patients engaged once they walk out the office door. However, the good news is that many resources are available to help close this gap between providers and their patients, including other patient health care team members. If all team members take time to understand each other's roles, communicate with one another to establish clear goals, and support the patient with a united front, true patient-centered care and improved health outcomes are highly attainable.

Target Audience

DMU faculty, staff, students, residents, and the medical community.

Objectives

  • Describe the scope of practice for an Athletic Trainer and Physical Therapist and the variety of roles they can serve within a health care team.
  • Identify ways that Athletic Trainers are utilized to extend the reach of a clinic and provide proper direction of care.
  • Examine how Athletic Trainers and Physical Therapists work to help bridge the gap between patients and providers.

Session proposals are now being accepted for the DMU Grand Rounds series! Have you encountered an interesting clinical case, seen a patient with a unique history, condition, and/or treatment protocol, or been involved with interprofessional management that improves patient care and treatment outcomes? If so, you're invited and encouraged to submit a session proposal! You do not need to be a member of the DMU community to submit a proposal. To learn more about the series and access the submission form, please click the button below.
