To be updated on current trends in pain management and obtain certification for the required pain management CME required by the Iowa Board of Medicine.

Target Audience

IaPMR members. This conference is only open to osteopathic and allopathic physicians.

A Physician/Attorney View of Pain Management Medical Malpractice Issues
11 a.m.Edward (Pat) Finnerty, Ph.D.
Neurophysiology of Pain
  1. Describe and differentiate the physiologic characteristics of nociception and pain.
  2. Identify and describe the characteristics and physiologic processes mediating the various types of pain.
  3. Identify and describe the processes mediating neuropathic pain.
  4. Identify and describe the mechanisms mediating some of the interventions for pain management.

Pain Management and the Iowa Board of Medicine
  1. State why the Iowa Board of Medicine (IBM) is concerned about pain management practices in the State.
  2. Recognize pain management IBM rules.
  3. Document appropriate pain management encounters with patients.
  4. Discuss the new IBM expectations for two hours of CME every two years chronic pain managements and end of life care.

Chronic Pain Management in the Office Setting
  1. Create a treatment plan for responsible opioid prescribing.
  2. Define informed consent and recognize the need for patient agreements.
  3. Identify resources for pharmacologic vigilance and pain management, i.e. assessment tools, urine drug screens, and on-line resources.

Objectives

  1. Review the neurophysiology of pain. 
  2. Practice safe pain management.
