Description

This session will use real-world poison center case scenarios to guide participants through the clinical evaluation and management of toxic exposures. Through case-based discussion, participants will differentiate among major toxidromes and identify appropriate management strategies, including observation, decontamination, antidotal therapy, and symptomatic treatment, to support safe and effective patient care.

Educational Need

Healthcare professionals across care settings encounter patients with suspected poisonings and toxic exposures, yet may have gaps in their ability to rapidly extract and prioritize key clinical information, recognize toxidromes, and select appropriate management strategies. Limited familiarity with toxidrome-based assessment and evidence-informed treatment options, as well as underutilization of the Iowa Poison Control Center as a clinical resource, can delay decision-making and impact patient safety. Increased awareness of how poison control centers support clinicians through case-based consultation and coordinated patient care will help improve timely management and outcomes in toxicologic emergencies.

Learning Objectives

  1. Extract and prioritize key clinical information from poison center case scenarios, including exposure history, timing, dose, and patient-specific risk factors.
  2. Differentiate among major toxidromes using case-based clues.
  3. Identify appropriate management strategies based on toxin or toxidrome recognition, including observation, decontamination, antidotal therapy, and symptomatic management.

Speaker

Linda B. Kalin, RN, BS, CSPI
Executive Director, Iowa Poison Control Center, Adjunct Faculty Member and Preceptor, University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, and Adjunct Faculty Member, Drake College of Pharmacy
