Purpose

A clinical instructor is an experienced practitioner who provides supervision during clinical practice and facilitates the application of theory to practice for students and staff learners. They assist the learner by setting expectations, providing effective feedback about their performance, and providing appropriate opportunities to meet their learning objectives.

Des Moines University supports healthcare providers who choose to actively participate in the education of our students by offering excellent clinical training opportunities. Clinical instructors not only transmit skills but are mentors who convey the core values important to Des Moines University: accountability, collaboration, honesty, inclusiveness, and wellness. 

Clinical instructors do what no textbook or classroom can accomplish. As a result, the students benefit from the community-based experience, while preceptors benefit from integrating new ideas and techniques into their practices currently taught in academic health sciences institutions. This session will discuss system complexities and challenges commonly encountered in clinical education. The speaker will highlight effective practices in developing and maintaining strong partnerships.

Speaker

Wallace Boeve, EdD, PA-C, serves as dean of Des Moines University’s College of Health Sciences. He joined DMU in 2020, extending his successful career as a practicing physician assistant and an academician. Before his leadership role at DMU, he served as the founding program director and professor in the physician assistant master’s program at Bethel University in Minnesota. Earlier, he served as department chair and program director of physician assistant studies in the College of Health Professions at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, MI. He earned his B.S. degree in biomedical sciences at Grand Valley State University and his M.S. degree in physician assistant studies at Baylor College of Medicine. He earned his EdD in educational leadership and administration degree from Eastern Michigan University. Full biography.
