Updates on the Management of Asthma
Overview
Purpose
Mary Greeley Medical Center Grand Rounds is a multidisciplinary clinical activity that maintains, develops, or increases a physician's knowledge, skills, professional performance, and relationships to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession.
Target Audience
Physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, medical students (rotating), non-medical students (rotating), and healthcare administrators.
Learning Objectives
- Describe asthma endotypes and how their associated immune pathways contribute to airway inflammation and asthma.
- Define and differentiate AIR and SMART therapy.
- Explain how updated GINA guidelines have changed our approach to asthma reliever therapy.
- Identify the available biologics for asthma.
- Discuss how understanding asthma endotypes enables personalized treatment strategies.
Speaker
Jason Cascio, MD, PhD
Allergist-Immunologist, McFarland Clinic
Dr. Cascio received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Immunology from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, and his Medical Doctorate from Loyola University Chicago in Maywood, Illinois. Dr. Cascio completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Allergy/Immunology Fellowship from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.
As an Allergist-Immunologist, Dr. Cascio provides services to adults and children, including assessment of allergy symptoms, testing, and treatment, including allergy shots. He diagnoses and treats allergic diseases such as asthma, rhinitis, hay fever, anaphylaxis, angioedema, hives, and eczema. He also diagnoses and treats allergic reactions to foods, drugs, and insect stings. Dr. Cascio specializes in evaluating and managing immune deficiency diseases and other immune-based disorders.
