Description

Health equity, defined as when everyone can access fair and just opportunities to attain their maximal level of health (CDC, 2024), is a goal for all healthcare systems. Yet, despite increasing awareness of health disparities, gaps persist in the preparation of our future healthcare professionals to address these inequities effectively.

This study aimed to aid in the development of healthcare students’ competency by facilitating collaborative strategies to promote health equity through simulation and interdisciplinary discussion. This can be reflected best by Hearst and colleagues (2021) who stated, “Health professionals must develop a greater self-awareness and humility when working with and for underserved populations, and clearly recognize that each of us is embedded within social, political, economic and other systems and structures that determine where we live, how we are educated, what we will achieve, and how we are treated.”

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify two key variables for conducting an interprofessional simulation addressing health equity.
  2. Discuss the implications of student learning outcomes from participation in the health equity simulation.
  3. Reflect on how best to implement health equity education in their own curriculum.
