A highlight of the HEARTland Network OPTI is Resident Education Day. This is a concentrated educational session focusing on OMM skills, Simulation Laboratory experiences and professional development presentations.  It is offered to the residents of affiliated programs as a benefit of membership.  Resident Education Day occurs twice a year at Des Moines University, in the Spring and Fall.

Blane Harding, MA
Director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs at the University of Kansas

Blane Harding is a consultant for private companies and has worked with over 30 institutions of higher learning across the country.  He recently retired from Colorado State University where he served as the Director of Advising, Recruitment, and Retention for the College of Liberal Arts.  Professor Harding has taught courses in African American history and Ethnic Studies for the past twenty one years.  He received his BA in Interdisciplinary Communication from S.U.N.Y. at Brockport and his MA in 19th Century American history from Colorado State University.  Mr. Harding has also served as a retention faculty member with the Council for Opportunity in Education which oversees the national TRIO programs.  He is a faculty member and past Chair of the Summer Institute Advisory Board for the National Academic Advising Association as well as the former Chair of the Multicultural Concerns Commission.  Mr. Harding has published several articles on diversity, multicultural advising, and advisor training.  Mr. Harding has presented at national conferences on various topics that focus on African American, Latino(a), Bi-racial, Native American, and Asian/Pacific Island students in higher education.  His most recent publications include a chapter titled “Students with Specific Needs” in Academic Advising:  A Comprehensive Handbook October 2008 and “From Bridges to Coalitions:  Collaboration Between Academic Advising Units and Offices that Support Students of Color”, NACADA 30 Anniversary Monograph Series, August 2009.

In 2001, Denver Colorado’s Channel 7 Television station recognized Mr. Harding as an “Everyday Hero” for his community involvement.  He is the recipient of several honors and awards including:  CSU Minority Distinguished Service Award, College of Liberal Arts Excellence in Teaching Award, CSU Alumni Association “Six Best” Teacher Award, the City of Loveland “Citizens That Make a Difference”, Black Student Services Distinguished Faculty Award, History Department Phi Alpha Theta Outstanding Professor Award, the Provost’s Jack E. Cermak Advising Award, the Provost Oliver P. Pennock Distinguished Service Award, and most recently the Distinguished Administrative Professional Award.

Rich Salas, PhD
Director for Multicultural Affairs at Des Moines University

Des Moines University is a graduate level and private medical school located in Des Moines, Iowa.  In this important role, Dr. Salas is responsible for multicultural programming and providing students/faculty/staff training in the area of cultural competency.  Prior to this role, Dr. Salas served in the role of Associate Director for El Centro and Greek Life at Colorado State University (CSU).  In this dual role Dr. Salas served and supported all students to be successful at CSU while pursuing their academic degrees. Rich earned his Master’s degree in Human Resources, and Ph.D. in Educational Leadership at Colorado State University. Dr. Salas is only a handful of individuals who have completed levels I, II and III of the Intercultural Awareness training offered through the Rocky Mountain Intercultural Institute. Additionally, Dr. Salas is certified as a Master level facilitator of the Diversity Health Series developed by Kaiser Permanente.

Dr. Salas has helped organize and facilitate several diversity, leadership conferences and retreats. His commitment to celebrating diversity and empowering medical and health science students with the cultural awareness, knowledge and skillsets necessary to provide patient centered care are of extreme importance to him. Dr. Salas has presented leadership and culturally relevant workshops at the local, state, and national levels. Dr. Salas is also an accomplished musician and has played guitar professionally for over 20 years.  His pride and joy are his family. He is married to Beatrice Silva-Salas and has 3 boys- Ernesto (23 yrs. old), Diego (17 yrs. old), Richy (12 yrs. old) and his little princess- Danielle Alexis- (8 yrs. old).

How Does the OPTI Choose the Topics for the Professional Development Sessions?

Results from a formal needs assessment survey done every other year with the members provides a list of topics for us to choose from as well as feedback provided from the evaluations of previous workshops and conferences provides information for the planning of future Resident Education Day curricula.  Also timely medical issues effecting healthcare identified by state and national medical organizations are considered for inclusion.  We strive to identify topics in which the information we provide information can be used immediately upon returning to patient care. So it is important when completing evaluations that you provide a list of topics that you would like to learn more about in future meetings.
