  • Understand generally the concepts of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and how they affect prescribing in older adults.
  • Give examples of “good” or “necessary” polypharmacy.
  • List specific classes of drugs relatively contraindicated in the geriatric population.
  • Describe the history, importance, and application of Beers Criteria.
  • Explain the principles of prescribing for older patients.

Paul Volker, MD

Biography

Dr. Volker discloses that holds no professional or remunerative relationships with pharmaceutical or medical equipment manufacturers. He does receive grant funds from the United States Geriatrics Workforce Education Project. While not recommending a specific drug, Dr. Volker will discuss the potential reduction of use of some drugs or drug classes. Proprietary drug names will also be referenced by their generic names.
