Description

Medication management is an instrumental activity of daily living that occupational therapists (OT) and pharmacists address within their scope of practice, but is often discussed in their professional silos of practice. The neurodivergent population transitioning from adolescence to adulthood is an emerging practice area for healthcare providers, as individuals are learning and attempting to live independently for the first time.

An interprofessional Creighton IPE medication management passport event for Phoenix Health Science was developed for OT and pharmacy students and is held at First Place, a residence facility focused on developing independent living skills for young adults with neurodivergent conditions. Clinically, limited interprofessional collaboration occurs between OT and Pharmacists when interprofessional collaboration could benefit patients holistically and specifically for transitional populations to increase independence in daily living skills.

This presentation will cover program development and implementation strategies to replicate opportunities for neurodivergent populations or expand to other populations. Additionally, it will review OT and Pharmacy student learning outcomes related to professional competency, knowledge of each other’s roles in medication management, and attitudes toward interprofessional teams.

Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between occupational therapy and pharmacy students to navigate medication management education for the transitional neurodivergent population.
  2. Reflect on student IPE learning outcomes and how they can be applied to the real-world healthcare community to improve patient outcomes.
  3. Review research findings of OT and Pharmacy student IPE learning outcomes related to student professional competency working with the neurodivergent population, knowledge of professional roles, and attitudes toward IP teams.
