Overview

Purpose

Mary Greeley Medical Center Grand Rounds is a multi-disciplinary clinical activity that maintains, develops, or increases the knowledge, skills, professional performance, and relationships a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession.

This activity describes the regulatory guidance, indications, contraindications, best practice in usage of prescribing and managing opioids and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in the management of their patients.

Target Audience

This live activity is designed to meet the educational needs of healthcare professionals who diagnose and treat patients including nurses, residents, student nurses, and physicians' assistants.

Learning Objectives

  1. Review the history of the opioid crisis in the U.S. 
  2. List opioid prescribing standards around dosage, formulation, and duration.
  3. Utilize the CDC recommendations for clinicians prescribing opioids. 
  4. Discuss common signs of opioid use disorder. 

Speaker

Susan A. Sgambati, MD, FACS, FASCR
Medical Director, Patient Safety and Risk Management at COPIC Companies

Dr. Sgambati is a native of northern New Jersey. She attained her undergraduate degree from Brown University with honors in Biomedical Ethics. She is a graduate of New York Medical College, where she was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha honors society. She completed her general surgery training at the University of Connecticut. During residency, she performed 3 years of cell biology research at Yale University. Dr. Sgambati completed fellowship training in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr. Sgambati became the Medical Director of COPIC’s Patient Safety and Risk Management Department in 2020. Prior to this, she practiced at Rose Medical Center in Denver for 22 years, where she was the Chair of the Department of Surgery since 2007. She co-founded the Colorado Comprehensive Pelvic Floor Center.
