Healthcare professionals.

Educational Need

Healthcare professionals managing traumatic orthopedic injuries face clinical complexity when determining appropriate antibiotic prophylaxis, particularly in high-contamination mechanisms such as lawnmower-related open fractures. Variability in recognizing risk factors that influence antimicrobial selection and duration, as well as inconsistent integration of surgical and antibiotic management strategies, can contribute to suboptimal infection prevention and patient outcomes. This activity addresses these practice gaps by reviewing evidence-based risk stratification, key components of open fracture management, and coordinated surgical–antibiotic approaches to optimize recovery and reduce complications.

Learning Objectives

  1. List risk factors that can alter antibiotic prophylaxis for trauma.
  2. Identify key elements in the management of open fracture injuries.
  3. Describe how surgical and antibiotic management are integrated to improve patient outcomes.
