Massive Transfusion Protocol
Purpose
Mary Greeley Medical Center Grand Rounds is a multi-disciplinary clinical activity that maintains, develops, or increases the knowledge, skills, professional performance, and relationships a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession.
Target Audience
Physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, medical students (rotating), non-medical students (rotating), and healthcare administrators.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the advantages of having a massive transfusion protocol (MTP).
- Define the blood components that are typically part of an MTP.
- Discuss the potential complications of MTPs.
Speaker
K. Alex Smith, DO
Medical Director, LifeServe Blood Center
Dr. K. Alex Smith has been LifeServe Blood Center’s Medical Director since 2015. Dr. Smith served four years in the United States Navy after high school. He completed a B.A. in Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis, medical school at A.T. Still University, Clinical Pathology residency at Summa Health/NEOMED, and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine fellowship at the University of Iowa. He is currently board-certified in Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine.
At LifeServe Blood Center, Dr. Smith oversees all aspects of blood donation, product testing, therapeutic apheresis, and cellular therapy. He also provides education and consultation on transfusion-related topics.

- DO: Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences (DMU) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. DMU designates this activity for a maximum of 1.0 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.
