Educational Need
Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a common and complex condition that many clinicians find challenging to diagnose and manage. Gaps remain in applying DSM-5 criteria to assess severity, initiating evidence-based pharmacologic and behavioral treatments, and managing withdrawal safely in various settings. Education is also needed to address the impact of co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions on treatment planning and patient outcomes.
Learning Objectives
- Utilize the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5) diagnostic criteria for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) to assess severity and guide treatment in clinical practice.
- Identify evidence-based pharmacologic and behavioral treatment options for AUD and how to initiate them.
- Recognize signs and symptoms of alcohol withdrawal and how to initiate appropriate management in inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Identify common medical and psychiatric comorbidities associated with AUD that may impact treatment planning.
