It Is Brain Science: Media Violence as a Risk for Aggression

Ames, IA US
February 19, 2020

Purpose

Mary Greeley Medical Center Grand Rounds is a multi-disciplinary clinical activity which serves to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional performance and relationships that a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public or the profession.

Target Audience

Physicians, Advance Practice Professionals, Nurses, Ancillary Staff, and Medical Students (Rotating).

Purpose

Violence and aggression are significant public health problems, yet primary care and pediatric providers are not often able to intervene until after there is a problem. Understanding how the media can increase the risk for children to engage in aggression may allow for intervention before there are serious problems.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the research on media violence through a risk and resilience framework.
  • Understand the psychological mechanisms through which media violence has effects.
