Educational Need
First responders and the healthcare professionals who care for them are routinely exposed to cumulative trauma. Yet, symptoms of psychological injury often go unrecognized, minimized, or untreated due to stigma, limited training, and system-level barriers. This activity will educate clinicians to better identify trauma-related conditions in first responders, apply evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches, and support pathways that promote resilience, recovery, and hope while reducing burnout, suicide risk, and long-term functional impairment.
Learning Objectives
- Identify unique stressors specific to first responders.
- Review the effects of stress on the body, mind, personal relationships, and career.
- Address the stigma surrounding seeking help.
- Discuss how the medical field can better support first responders in need.
