The IHI Triple Aim challenges us to prepare practice-ready graduates who work together to improve the patient experience, improve the health of populations, and reduce healthcare costs. But health profession education programs committed to transforming curricula to teach proficiency with interprofessional collaborative practice competencies face multiple challenges at the individual, program, and institutional levels. Grounded in four years of experience, this panel will reflect on the process of institutionalizing interprofessional education and building meaningful, cross-college collaborative partnerships that have transcended multiple administrative changes at the institutional level and grown to become the foundation of a core interprofessional longitudinal curriculum at the University of Kentucky.

Speakers

James Ballard, MS, Ed
Associate Director of the University of Kentucky Center for Interprofessional HealthCare Education Research and Practice. 

Mr. Ballard received a B.A. in psychology from the University of Notre Dame and an M.S. in educational psychology from the University of Kentucky. Currently he is pursuing a doctoral degree in educational leadership. His professional interests include adult cognitive and intellectual development, interprofessional bias and stereotyping, experiential education, and achievement motivation among adult learners.

Andrea L. Pfeifle, Ed, PT
Director of the Center for Interprofessional HealthCare Education, Research and Practice at the University of Kentucky

Dr. Pfeifle promotes teamwork and excellence in patient and community centered care through interprofessional education, research, and practice. Dr. Pfeifle graduated from the University of Kentucky with a BHS in Physical Therapy, a Master of Science in Instructional Systems Design and a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. Dr. Pfeifle has published and presented numerous times in the areas of faculty development, sustainable instructional design principles in medical and health sciences education, assessment and evaluation of individual student and program level outcomes during experiential education.  She is a national leader, advocate, and active consultant for faculty development, instructional design and implementation of collaborative learning models and program evaluation to support interprofessional education and collaborative practice.  

Sharon P. Turner, DDS, JD
Dean at the College of Dentistry at the University of Kentucky 

Dr. Turner received her DDS degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed a two year NIH sponsored postdoctoral training in Diagnosis and Management of Craniofacial Pain at UNC-CH. She received her JD degree magna cum laude from North Carolina Central University in 1995 and was admitted to the North Carolina Bar in 1996. Dr. Turner has had a strong interest in community issues since her days at a dental student when she was a student leader in the “Student Health Action Clinics” for indigent persons in the Chapel Hill region. Her interest in bilateral engagement was enhanced after members of her college began developing community partnerships to serve the triple roles of sustainable clinical centers to address severe access to dental care problems; clinical research on community identified oral-systemic health links; and development of community based training sites for dental students. Her ACE Fellowship project focused on university engagement. Dr. Turner has published in both dental and legal journals and is a frequent speaker at regional, national and international meetings.
