  • Illustrate the importance of psychosocial therapies in the prevention and treatment of mental, neurological, and substance use disorders.
  • Recognize the immense gaps to access and quality to psychosocial therapies in low- and middle-income countries, with a key focus on Rwanda and Kenya as example countries.
  • Describe key lessons learned in the global efforts to overcome these gaps in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Discuss the solutions that a private network of mental health hubs is exploring in three countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Michael Grosspietch, PhD is the Founder and Executive Director of the Global Engagement Institute as well as the mHub. He holds a PhD in development politics (WWU Munster/Germany).

Esther Mbau is the Country Director of mHub Kenya. A counseling psychologist and professional trainer by profession, she previously worked at Amani Counselling Centre & Training Institute as a regional center coordinator of the Nairobi CBD Campus. She holds a degree in counseling psychology from Africa Nazarene University. Esther regularly appears on national TV stations such as NTV or K24 to offer professional views on issues relating to mental health like the psychosocial consequences of Covid-19, effective parenting, dealing with trauma, loss, and grief, as well as sexual abuse issues.

Yvonne Uwamahoro is the Head of Mental Health Services of mHub Rwanda. Before joining mHub, she spent 13 years working for the Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital of Ndera, the country's only specialist referral hospital for mental illnesses, as the Head of the Consultation Unit of its Kicukiro branch "Centre Psychotherapeutique Icyizere." For five of those years, she was also the Acting Head of the Center. Yvonne is a nurse by training with a Master's Degree in Public Health from the University of Rwanda.
