Educational Need

Antibiograms are essential tools for assessing antibiotic resistance patterns. While these tools are common in hospitals, they are rarely shared with the community. Many treatment guidelines for diseases treated on an outpatient basis (including community-acquired pneumonia, sinusitis, urinary tract infections, and diverticulitis) refer to local resistance patterns for antibiotic selection; however, if antibiograms are not shared beyond the hospital walls, outpatient prescribers will be unable to select empiric antimicrobials without considerable uncertainty.

Prior publications have documented the process of developing cumulative regional antibiograms, but have not investigated the impact these tools might have. Education on local resistance may prevent unnecessarily broad therapies or selection of ineffective agents that place patients at risk for adverse events.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain how to interpret an antibiogram and its role in empiric antibiotic selection.
  • Recall current outpatient treatment recommendations for urinary tract infections, community-acquired pneumonia, sinusitis, and diverticulitis.
  • Apply local resistance patterns to a patient case and select appropriate empiric pharmacotherapy.
