Description

Iowa is seeing an uptick in the number of children dealing with obesity. The healthcare team needs to be equipped with the knowledge to properly build a foundation and help prevent obesity in children. The Iowa Medical Society, American Academy of Pediatrics, and the United Way want to bring the healthcare team more information about early feeding practices, relationships, and the environment in which pediatricians can help prevent obesity.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the problematic prevalence of childhood obesity and identify opportunities for early prevention.
  • Review the new USDA nutrition guidelines and the latest healthy eating recommendations and best practices.
  • Explore the challenge of picky eating and offer solutions for creating happier, healthier family mealtimes.

Natalie Muth, MD, MPH, RDN, FAAP, FACSM

Dr. Natalie Muth graduated from UCLA with majors in psychology and physiological sciences with college honors, summa cum laude, and Phi Beta Kappa. She earned a Master of Public Health in nutrition at University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill completing her master thesis on childhood obesity screening in schools based on her work at the CDC’s Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity. She graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine where she was awarded the Davis Pediatric Student Scholar, recognition given to the most promising medical student planning to specialize in pediatrics. She completed her training in pediatrics at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital in the Community Health and Advocacy Training track.

Dr. Natalie Muth is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, and a certified specialist in sports dietetics.
