Description

This session presents practical scheduling strategies to help clinician educators balance teaching and patient care in busy ambulatory settings. Participants will learn how to align learner numbers with clinic capacity, use micro‑scheduling techniques to protect patient flow, and integrate students as value‑added members of the care team, enhancing both efficiency and educational impact.

  1. Describe common scheduling-related barriers to teaching medical students in ambulatory clinics.
  2. Discuss evidence-based scheduling strategies to integrate learners without disrupting patient flow.
  3. Compare at least two micro-scheduling techniques that enhance both educational value and clinic efficiency.

Gary Beck Dallaghan, PhD
Assistant Dean for Accreditation, Carle Illinois College of Medicine

Dr. Beck Dallaghan is the assistant dean for accreditation at Carle Illinois College of Medicine at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He heads the college's accreditation and educational quality improvement initiatives. Dr. Beck Dallaghan has nearly three decades of experience in medical education. For over 20 years, he was at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, where he completed a master's in mathematics and a doctorate in educational psychology. He served as their assistant dean for medical education for five years. In 2018, he joined the University of North Carolina School of Medicine as director of educational scholarship. After a brief period at a new medical school from 2022 to 2024, Dr. Beck Dallaghan explores accreditation and educational quality improvement through interpretive policy analysis. Nationally, he is actively involved in several medical education organizations, including nearly 30 years with the Alliance for Clinical Education and his current role as president of the Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics.
