Description

There is a well-documented gap in healthcare providers’ recognition and management of the Female Athlete Triad. Despite growing awareness, many clinicians remain unfamiliar with the current diagnostic criteria, screening tools, and evidence-based management strategies for the Triad. As a result, the condition is often underdiagnosed and/or mismanaged, leading to preventable complications such as stress fractures, infertility, and long-term bone loss. This gap is compounded by limited formal education on the Triad in medical curricula and inconsistent screening practices among providers who work with female athletes.

Clinicians face several barriers in addressing the Female Athlete Triad, including limited awareness and training, time constraints during clinical encounters, and discomfort discussing sensitive topics such as disordered eating or menstrual irregularities. The lack of clear screening guidelines and standardized management protocols also contributes to diagnostic and treatment uncertainty. To overcome these barriers, this educational activity hopes to incorporate evidence-based education focused on early recognition, practical screening strategies, and multidisciplinary care approaches.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the pathophysiologic relationship between low energy availability, menstrual dysfunction, and decreased bone mineral density in the Female Athlete Triad and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S).
  2. Recognize clinical indicators and risk factors that place athletes at increased risk for developing the Female Athlete Triad.
  3. Implement evidence-based screening tools and diagnostic criteria to identify the Female Athlete Triad in various clinical settings.
  4. Formulate a coordinated, multidisciplinary management plan that addresses medical, nutritional, and psychological aspects of care for affected athletes.
