Educational Need

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity that interfere with daily functioning and development. It commonly manifests in childhood but can persist into adolescence and adulthood. ADHD can significantly impact academic performance, social interactions, and emotional well-being if left untreated.

Recent statistics on ADHD prevalence globally vary, but according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States:

  • As of 2021, approximately 9.4% of children aged 2-17 years had received an ADHD diagnosis.
  • Boys are diagnosed with ADHD more frequently than girls.
  • The prevalence of ADHD can vary among different age groups and demographics.
  • Diagnosis rates have been rising steadily, which could be due to increased awareness, better identification, and changing diagnostic criteria.

Objectives

  1. Define Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and DSM criteria for diagnosis.
  2. Identify multiple non-pharmacological treatment options for ADHD.
  3. Identify multiple pharmacologic treatment options for ADHD.
