Purpose
Acquired brain injury (ABI) refers to any brain damage that occurs after birth. ABI can impact any area of the brain. It may arise suddenly due to a specific incident such as trauma or a stroke, or it can develop over an extended time due to chronic conditions like drug abuse or neurodegenerative disease. Symptomology varies drastically depending on the location and severity of the injury, and loss of function may include physical, cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and social difficulties. No two patients with ABI are the same. A complex network of communication between the patient, their family/caregiver(s), and many healthcare professionals is essential to improve survival rates and provide the best possible outcomes for these individuals. This session will discuss the differences between a transdisciplinary care team and more common models of interdisciplinary care to demonstrate how healthcare providers can improve functioning and enhance the quality and quantity of their interactions in the setting of ABI.
Target Audience
Healthcare professionals.
Learning Objectives
- Describe three fundamental differences between transdisciplinary team functioning and more traditional multi and interdisciplinary care models.
- Discuss three ways in which traditional medical interventions/recommendations can be altered to enhance functioning in the home environment.
- Identify three techniques medical providers can use to enhance the quality and quantity of their interactions with individuals who have neurogenic cognitive/communication disorders.
