The target audience for these trainings are community service providers and health professionals who would benefit from behavioral health education.
Contingency management approaches are based on principles of operant conditioning. According to this theoretical framework, a behavior that is reinforced, such as attendance at treatment, will increase in frequency. This presentation will focus on three different reinforcement approaches used to reinforce and strengthen desired patient/client behaviors.
- Identify two psychosocial interventions that have shown efficacy in treating persons with a stimulant use disorder (cocaine, methamphetamine, amphetamine).
- Describe how contingency management programs can enhance treatment outcomes and facilitate patient recovery.
- Identify key behavioral terms, definitions, and principles underlying successful contingency programs.
- Describe three different reinforcement approaches used to reinforce and strengthen desired patient behavior.
Patricia (Pat) Stilen, MSW
Co-Director, Mid-America Technology Transfer Center (Mid-America ATTC)
Ms. Stilen, is a clinical social worker and Project Director in the Collaborative to Advance Health Services at the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s School of Nursing and Health Studies. Stilen has led the Mid-America Addiction Technology Transfer Center since 2000. As PI/Director of the ATTC Center of Excellence on Behavioral Health for Pregnant & Postpartum Women and Their Families (2015-2017), she managed the development of a national curriculum, a web-based toolkit, and supported national training/technical assistance for direct care treatment providers. Prior to joining the ATTC, she directed substance use and mental health disorder treatment services; established addiction continuing education and college coursework for public and private organizations, including managed health care systems.
