Educational Need
The American College of Rheumatology's Reproductive Health Guidelines provide important guidance for managing contraception and pregnancy in women with rheumatic disease, but they are hard to implement without tools. We will discuss approaches to implementing these guidelines within the clinic to improve pregnancy prevention, planning, and management.
Systemic lupus erythematosus is a complicated disease that presents a wide range of symptoms. Few current treatments control inflammation, are feasible for patients to take for a long time, and improve quality of life. Therefore, rheumatologists must use a broad range of approaches to help patients with lupus live healthy and productive lives.
Rheumatologists often select their career paths without understanding the opportunities and challenges inherent in any practice setting. What’s more, by mid-career, one is ensconced in their selected path that they are unaware of their colleagues’ experiences in another practice setting.
Today’s challenging healthcare environment affects how physicians manage their practices, interfering with access to care and forcing them to make difficult decisions. Rheumatologists need to be aware of emerging trends in practice management, payer reform, and administrative simplification of impact on the success of their practices and the quality of patient care.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Review the American College of Rheumatology’s Reproductive Health Guidelines.
- Discuss approaches to implementing the ACS Reproductive Health Guidelines within the clinic to improve pregnancy prevention, planning, and management.
- Review the wide range of symptoms presented in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.
- Discuss approaches to help patients with Lupus live healthy and productive lives.
- Discuss the perspectives of physicians practicing in another setting, which will enhance the current provision of patient care.
- Identify opportunities for state and national advocacy, legislative action, and our need for representation at the state-national level.
- Review changes in state policies affecting practice.
- Evaluate the potential impact of new legislation on practice and payment models and be prepared to adapt.
Subject to change.

11:45 am | Practice Setting Perspectives: Opportunities and Challenges Bogdan Cherascu, MD, MS (Moderator) Mark A. Burdt, DO Hanna Zembrzuska, MD, MME Rheumatologists often select their career paths without understanding the opportunities and challenges inherent in any particular practice setting. Moreover, by mid-career, one is ensconced in their selected path that they are unaware of their colleagues’ experiences in another practice setting. Therefore, practicing rheumatologists, fellows, and trainees will benefit from hearing the perspectives of physicians practicing in another setting, thereby affecting their practice's success and patient care provision.

2:15 pm | Advocacy Perspectives Michael S. Brooks, MD, FACP, FACR (Moderator) Brian Henderson Melissa Horn, MPA Rheumatologists are not always aware of the harm to their patients caused by certain health insurance policies. Nor are many aware of state and federal legislation (both active and passed) that enables them to access the correct medicine for their patients and maintain the ability of copay assistance to count towards their health insurance out-of-pocket deductible. Further understanding of the difference between drug pricing of provider-administered medications and pharmacy-acquired medication and how it affects patient access is needed.
