Target Audience
Des Moines University faculty and staff.
Purpose
This class will introduce you to the key elements you and your students need to know to help you accomplish your clinical, research, and educational goals.
PubMed provides free access to MEDLINE®, the NLM® database of indexed citations and abstracts to medical, nursing, dental, veterinary, health care, and preclinical sciences journals. This class will cover essential features of this resource to help enhance your abilities to search PubMed.
Learning Objectives
By the end of class participants will be able to independently explain key concepts and/or perform the following skills as indicated by the observation of the instructor and student’s self‐assessment:
- Identify PubMed mobile.
- Identify and search the Single Citation Matcher.
- Define Clinical Queries.
- Compare Topic Specific Queries.
- Explain the Mesh Database and PubMed Central
- Describe PubMed Commons (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedcommons/).
- Define and locate PubMed Health (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/).
- Demonstrate MyNCBI including saving and sharing search strategies and results, MyBibliography, SciENcv, ORCID.
- Explain search results and Journals in the NCBI databases: What does it mean to be indexed in Medline?
- Identify how to locate further training materials from the National Library of Medicine (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/disted/pubmed.html) and the DMU library (http://lib.dmu.edu/db/pubmed).
