The goal of this conference is to help long-term care clinicians become more proficient in meeting the needs of mentally ill residents in their facilities.

Motivational Interviewing in Long-Term Care

  1. Discuss the basics of Motivational Interviewing, including the fundamental spirit and method.
  2. Explain the Motivational approach and its effectiveness.
  3. Compare and contrast Motivational Interviewing and other approaches.
  4. Implement basic Motivational Interviewing techniques.

MI is a technique that can be used to support residents who are struggling to improve their lifestyle choices, including weight loss, exercise, smoking cessation, sobriety, hygiene, and compliance with care. For those new to MI, an introductory video module will be sent out for viewing before the workshop.

    The Iowa Veterans Home is at 1301 Summit Street, Marshalltown, Iowa. Individuals should enter at the West Entrance, west of the corner of 13th Street and Summit. On the map below, this is shown as Independence Road. Go to the far north end of the entrance road and turn right into the large parking lot. The conference will be held in Whitehill Auditorium (Building #10 on the map). Handicapped parking is available across the street south of the cottages (#11), in the southeast corner of the lot immediately north of the cottages (#11), and in the gift shop parking lot.
