Description

The purpose of this activity is to increase the knowledge of learners in trends of medicine and disease factors related to neurology.  The mission of the activity is to enhance the knowledge and skills of neurology practitioners in Iowa to serve their communities better.

Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and New and Emerging Treatment Options

  1. Review the pathophysiology and disease burden of CIDP, the role of IgG autoantibodies, accurate patient identification and diagnosis, and the limitations of current treatments.  
  2. Analyze recent clinical trial data on new and emerging biologic treatments for CIDP and be prepared to contextualize these data into their practices.  
  3. Develop individualized treatment plans for CIDP based on patient prognosis, a review of treatment options, an assessment of safety, familiarity with current treatment guidelines, and shared decision-making.

  1. Review of the most recent guidelines related to genetic testing for ALS, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsies, and peripheral neuropathies. 
  2. Evaluate various genetic testing approaches for adult neurogenetic conditions, including risk alleles, panel testing, whole exome/genome sequencing, and how to interpret common result types (e.g., variants of uncertain significance).
  3. Integrate genetic counseling principles into neurological care, including how to discuss genetic risk, testing implications for family members, and the psychosocial impact of a genetic diagnosis in adult patients.

Moving Makes Me Hot, or Heat Makes Me Move? Three-Year-Old With "Febrile" Ataxia

  1. Provide a brief overview of ATP1A3- neurologic-related conditions and their triggers, and raise awareness of the condition.
  2. Highlight the importance of early identification of the correct type of movement disorder (from general neurologists) and when genetic testing might be the most useful in neurologic conditions.
  3. Recognize the importance of continuous education and the utility of genetic results in the care of patients with neurologic conditions, and how team collaboration can impact this.
