Purpose

Content will provide an overview of the AMA MAP™ Hypertension Program, an evidence-based quality improvement program aimed at achieving significant, sustained improvements in blood pressure control. The program name highlights the three key program components care teams should focus on, including measuring blood pressure accurately to obtain actionable data, acting rapidly to make effective, shared treatment decisions, and partnering with patients to support their self-management.

Learning Objective

  1. Define the importance of hypertension as a public health problem and the benefits of BP control.
  2. Recall the challenges of implementing clinical guidelines and the value of the MAP framework.
  3. Explore evidence-based quality improvement best practices aligned with the AMA MAP framework.
  4. Understand how to leverage AMA MAP™ Hypertension metrics, tools, resources, and programmatic support to support your organization's approach to hypertension management.

Speaker

Brent M. Egan, MD

Dr. Egan is Vice-President of cardiovascular Health in the Improving Health Outcomes group of the American Medical Association.  He also serves as Professor of Medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Greenville, Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina, Adjunct Professor of Public Health Sciences at Clemson University, and previously on the Board of Directors and President of the International Society of Hypertension in Blacks.   He received his medical degree and training in medicine and hypertension at the University of Michigan. His professional interests center on hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and vascular disease, which has led to some 375 original papers and reviews.  For the past 30 years, Dr. Egan has worked and continues to work with colleagues across the healthcare spectrum on translating the evidence base into better cardiovascular health promotion and disease prevention, especially for medically underserved populations.
