Purpose

This four-part webinar series related to the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative Healthy Choices Count Program launched in October, will assist physicians and other healthcare professionals in implementing changes within their practices to prevent and treat childhood obesity in their patients. The activity is designed to increase the knowledge and competence of physicians and other healthcare professionals in identifying, preventing, and treating childhood obesity.

Learning Objectives

  • Reflect on the presence weight stigma in the health care setting.
  • Describe the cycle of bias and obesity.
  • Recognize the importance of word choice, office environment and workflows in minimizing weight stigma.
  • Identify advocacy opportunities to address weight stigma more broadly.

Jennifer A. Groos, MD, FAAP
Pediatrician, Blank Children's Hospital, UnityPoint Health

Dr. Groos is a leader in childhood obesity prevention in Iowa, and serves as the chair of the Iowa Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Childhood Obesity.
