Target Audience

Referring physicians and other providers licensed to order medical imaging exams, as well as their office staff involved anywhere in the process (e.g., nurses, office managers, staff, receptionists, coders, schedulers, and radiologic technologists.

Purpose

Provide critical information about how ICD-10 impacts what referring offices need to communicate to the imaging provider when ordering imaging exams in order to ensure timely and uninterrupted access to medical imaging services for their patients.

Why is This Topic Important?

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has mandated the replacement of the ICD-9-CM code sets used by medical coders and billers to report health care diagnoses and procedures with ICD-10 codes, effective Oct. 1, 2014. ICD-10 implementation will radically change the way coding is currently done and will require a significant effort to implement.

Physician offices are diligently preparing for ICD-10.  Anecdotal evidence suggests most preparation is for internal practice needs.  Few practices are looking at how ICD-10 impacts the information they need to provide to the imaging facilities to which they refer their patients for important medical imaging exams.  Failure to adequately consider this aspect risks scheduling delays and/or intrusive and frustrating post exam queries from the imaging provider for additional information.

1. Identify the four primary data elements that impact code selection in ICD-10.
2. Apply those elements to the most common scenarios for ordering imaging studies.
3. Discuss the impact of ICD-10 on future reimbursement models.
