Purpose

The purpose of this activity is to educate podiatrists, orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons (MD/DO), physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses and other foot and ankle providers on the common and not-so-common foot and ankle surgery complications, including how to manage complications in order to provide the best outcome for patients.

Objectives

  • Discuss the management of complications from forefoot and midfoot surgery.
  • Discuss the management of complication of adult flatfoot deformity.
  • Discuss the management of complications arising from trauma to the foot and ankle.
  • Discuss the management of complications arising from ankle arthritis and subsequent treatment.
  • Describe developing concepts in the diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle conditions.
  • Describe ways to perfect and refine surgical techniques in foot surgery.

Professional Practice Gap

Complications are often unexpected and can occur with any procedure or any patient.  Recognizing the complication, developing a treatment plan, and executing the plan are the cornerstones for maximizing the outcomes from a complication.

MICHAEL BRAGE, MD

Dr. Brage is an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon who sees patients at the Sigvard T. Hansen Foot and Ankle Institute at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, WA. He treats all disorders of the foot and ankle including arthritis, tendon ruptures, foot and ankle deformities, acute trauma and fractures, repair of nonunions, total ankle replacements and repair of cartilage lesions. Dr. Brage enjoys the challenge of helping patients with severe foot and ankle deformities, injuries or disease, which limit their ability to lead an active lifestyle. It is rewarding for him to hear from patients following reconstructive or ankle replacement surgery, saying they have been able to resume activities. Dr. Brage is an avid softball player and enjoys contemporary rock music. Full biography.

NICHOLAS A. CHENEY, DO

Dr. Cheney is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in foot and ankle surgery. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from The Ohio State University, where he also served as team captain of the varsity men’s swim team. Following graduation, Dr. Cheney attended medical school at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and served for a number of years as a phase IV clinical instructor. Dr. Cheney completed both his internship and orthopedic residency at Doctor’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Following his residency, he completed a foot and ankle fellowship with the Orthopaedic Associates of Michigan in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His practice emphasis includes ankle arthroplasty, heel pain, bunions, hammertoes, fractures, and foot/ankle sport injuries. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Cheney currently serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, and a Foot & Ankle Clinical Reviewer for Orthopedics, a peer-reviewed journal covering all aspects of adult and pediatric orthopedic surgery and treatment. Dr. Cheney is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, and the Ohio Orthopaedic Society. Dr. Cheney resides in Upper Arlington with his wife and three children.  His extracurricular pursuits include exercising regularly, golfing, spending time with his family/friends, and following collegiate sports (especially the Buckeyes). Full biography.

SEAN GRAMBART, DPM, FACFAS

Dr. Grambart is an Assistant Professor in the College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Des Moines University in Iowa. He joined the University in the Fall of 2019 after practicing with the Urbana, IL-based Carle Physician Group and Carle Foundation Hospital’s surgery department since 2004. He is a Diplomat and board-certified physician in foot surgery and ankle/rearfoot surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He also is a past president and current Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. A frequent presenter at podiatric medical conferences with numerous published articles and textbook chapters, Dr. Grambart completed a surgical residency with the Northwest Podiatric Surgical Program at the Swedish Medical Center-Providence campus in Seattle and a trauma and reconstruction fellowship in Dresden, Germany. Full biography.

GREGORY POMEROY, MD

Dr. Pomeroy is a practicing orthopedic surgeon located in Portland, Maine. After completing his orthopedic surgical residency at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in 1994, he underwent fellowship training at Wayne State University under the direction of Dr. Arthur Manoli. Dr. Pomeroy is also an associate clinical professor of surgery on the staff of the University of New England and directs his own foot and ankle fellowship program, one of only twenty-four in the United States. As Chief Executive Officer of BESPA GLOBAL, Dr. Pomeroy brings his passion for education and development along with a growing team of highly qualified surgeons to work alongside industry to ultimately improve the medical treatment of patients. Full biography.

CHRISTOPHER REEVES, DPM, FACFAS

Dr. Reeves is a surgeon at the Orlando Foot and Ankle Clinic a division of Upperline Health in Orlando, Florida. He specializes in Reconstructive Foot and Ankle surgery and Total Ankle Replacements. Dr. Reeves is the Immediate Past President of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He is a Director for Surgical Services for Upperline Health, Research Director at Advent Health Hospital System and Faculty of the Advent Health East Surgical Residency. Dr. Reeves received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery in Miami, FL. He did a three-year surgical residency in reconstructive foot, ankle, and lower leg surgery at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA and advanced deformity correction training at the Rubin Institute of Advanced Orthopedics in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Shane is a Surgeon at the Orlando Foot and Ankle Clinic a division of Upperline Health in Orlando, Florida. She specializes in Reconstructive Foot and Ankle surgery. Dr. Shane is a Medical Director for Upperline Health, Department Chair at Advent Health Hospital System and Faculty of the Advent Health East Surgical Residency. Dr. Shane received her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery in Miami, FL. WESLEY STOTLER, DO

Dr. Stotler is an orthopedic surgeon at Tulsa Bone & Joint Associates in Oklahoma. He received his medical degree from Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tulsa, OK. His residency in orthopedic surgery was also completed at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Full biography.
