Target Audience
Instructors/leaders/coaches of evidence-based health promotion programs, public health professionals, nurses, diabetes educators, disability providers, physicians, pharmacists, allied healthcare professionals, and other interested individuals working in chronic disease prevention and management.
Purpose
Promoting equitable access for underserved populations is becoming a high priority for public health and health promotion professions. The ability to understand and integrate the needs of participants with a wide range of abilities is critical for anyone involved in the implementation of evidence-based chronic disease prevention & management programs. This 4-part training series will be provided by staff from the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability and Easterseals Iowa. It will cover foundational-level knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to adapt evidence-based health promotion programs, so they are inclusive of participants with and without disabilities.
Series Learning Objectives
- Identify three barriers to participation in evidence-based chronic disease prevention & management programs faced by adults with disabilities and solutions for each.
- Identify three resources related to promoting healthy eating and/or physical activity for participants with disabilities.
- Identify three ways to partner with the disability community to promote inclusive programs.
- Utilize two resources related to recruitment and retention of participants with disabilities in a diabetes prevention program.
- Explain the five domains of the Guidelines Recommendations Adaptations Including Disability (GRAIDs) adaptation framework.
- Apply the five domains of the GRAIDs to evidence-based programs.
- Develop a basic plan of action for removing barriers and sustaining inclusion.
