Target Audience

Primary care physicians, nurses, mental health professionals, substance use disorder professionals, or clinic staff who support behavioral health services.


Led by a panel of behavioral health experts, Behavioral Health ECHO helps participants learn best practices for treating common mental health conditions and connect with peers from around the state to discuss and learn best practices in identifying and treating behavioral health issues. The curriculum is delivered at no cost through case-based learning strategies via video conferencing technology.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the origins and functions of eating disorders.
  2. Identify signs and symptoms in both well-known and often missed eating disorder patients. 
  3. Develop insight into the often lengthy and complex treatment process.


Kathryn Wierda, Ph.D., L.P.

Dr. Wierda is a licensed psychologist in private practice in West Des Moines. She works with adolescents and adults seeking treatment for various mental health concerns. Still, she is particularly interested in treating eating disorders, identity-related concerns/stress (e.g., sexual orientation, gender, race), and the impact of trauma. She is trained in EMDR and is currently working toward her EMDR certification.


  • BA in Psychology from the University of Michigan
  • MA in School Counseling and Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Western Michigan University

Melissa Arnold, R.D., L.D.

Melissa is a Registered Dietitian in West Des Moines, IA with More to Life Nutrition Counseling, L.L.C., and has special training and skill in assessing, diagnosing, and treating dietary and nutritional problems. As a Registered Dietitian, Melissa Arnold, RD, LD performs nutritional counseling for people who wish to lose weight, have an eating disorder, need a customized diet for health reasons, experience food allergies or intolerances, suffer a digestive disorder, or wish to improve athletic ability.
