Description
This session will provide an overview of hospice and palliative care, emphasizing their role in improving quality of life for individuals with serious, chronic, or life-limiting illnesses. Participants will explore the principles of symptom management, goals-of-care discussions, and shared decision-making while examining the distinct roles of hospice and palliative care across the continuum of care. Through clinical examples, the session will highlight strategies for communicating with patients and families, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, and aligning treatment plans with patient values, preferences, and goals to support compassionate, patient-centered care.
Educational Need
Healthcare professionals frequently care for patients with serious illnesses who experience complex physical symptoms, psychosocial challenges, and difficult treatment decisions. Despite the growing need for hospice and palliative care services, clinicians may have limited training in recognizing appropriate referrals, managing symptoms, conducting goals-of-care conversations, and distinguishing between palliative care and hospice. This session addresses the need for healthcare professionals to strengthen their understanding of evidence-based hospice and palliative care principles, improve communication with patients and families, and collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams to provide compassionate, person-centered care that enhances quality of life and supports informed decision-making.
