Series Description
This series explores the revolutionary shift in medical and health professions education from traditional teaching methods to active learning approaches that enhance learner engagement and comprehension. The rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools is accelerating this transformation, including using AI-simulated patients in the pre-clerkship and clerkship years. It is offering unprecedented opportunities for innovation across the education continuum.
Our series provides valuable insights into implementing active learning methods in the classroom and virtual platforms. We will bridge the gap between these methods' potential and practical application, propelling the field toward a more interactive and impactful educational landscape. It embraces exciting and innovative learning techniques that are reshaping the future of medical and health professions education.
Webinar Description
Medical students no longer attend lectures and increasingly use online, 3rd party resources to study. But this is not enough; becoming a clinician requires more than online knowledge acquisition. The challenge is to design pre-clerkship courses meaningfully engaging students while leaning into generational trends. The speaker will describe how we redesigned the M1-year cardiology course at Saint Louis University School of Medicine in this presentation. Using a backward design process, all lectures were removed. Active learning sessions were used as primary drivers of the curriculum, and online 3rd party resources were curated as content sources for independent study and rework. He will show that the course's student outcomes and reception are vastly superior to the traditional lecture-based course.
