Educational Need
It is estimated that 23% of Americans age 65 and older have ‘mild cognitive impairment’, or MCI. Each year, 12% of those with MCI progress to dementia. Additionally, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease – by 2050, this number is expected to rise as high as 16 million. Alzheimer’s kills more Americans than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.
Geriatric behavioral health extends far beyond these statistics, and there is a shortage of mental health providers in the United States. The first medical contact for patients experiencing behavioral health symptoms is oftentimes a primary health provider. It is critical that providers in primary care are able to accurately identify mental health symptoms and help fill the gap to ensure patients receive the treatment they need.
OBJECTIVES
- Describe the vital role of the primary care provider in offering non-medication strategies to address issues relevant to health and mental health in aging patients.
- Identify patients who need, or will benefit from, non-medication strategies and resources in daily practice.
- Utilize resources provided to go beyond medication to address the whole-person (system) needs of aging patients.
