Discussed cases
Case 1: 69 year old male history of Bipolar Disorder presents to the geriatric unit after being brought by his POA for worsening mania. On the unit patient was grandiose and hyperverbal, making sexual comments. Patient was tangential and expansive on interview. Made statements about how he spoke to God and his deceased grandfather in his mind.
Case 2: 71 year old male with a history of Alzheimer's dementia presented to the emergency department (ED) around midnight via police/mobile crisis after he reportedly became aggressive/agitated at home. Was calm and cooperative on arrival and without complaints. Not suicidal or homicidal, denied delusions. Crisis informed the ED that the patient assaulted his daughter earlier in the evening and threatened to shoot her. Mobile crisis informed the ED provider that there were firearms in the home.
Case 3: 72 year old male retired postal worker with a lithium toxicity. First episode of depression in the 1960s and first documented manic episode occurred in the late 1970s. He has been stable on lithium for many years.
