| 8:15 am | Twelve Principles Key to the Future of Health Pritpal Tamber, MD, Co-Founder and CEO, Bridging Health & Community, London, England It has been understood for some time that risk factors alone cannot explain why someone is healthy or sick. The missing link is whether people have a sense of control over their lives, something that requires individuals and communities to have “agency” – the ability to make purposeful choices. Through the work of the many innovators in his Creating Health Collaborative, Dr. Tamber has gleaned 12 principles for how health systems can intentionally foster a community’s agency so as to improve its health.

Forum participants will have the opportunity to learn about the projects and talk with Academy class members during today’s breaks. |
| 9:45 am | Iowa’s Health: Changes and Challenges in Iowa’s Regional Trade Centers (Non-CME) Liesl Eathington, Assistant Scientist and Iowa Community Indicators Program Coordinator, Iowa State University, Ames Iowa cities both small and large serve as important anchors for regional economic stability across the state. This presentation will examine a range of social and economic indicators to gauge the health of Iowa’s regional trade centers that are defined as cities with populations from 5,000 to 9,999. An overview of Midwestern growth trends will provide regional and historical perspectives for Iowa’s recent performance and will highlight the particular challenges faced in rural areas. In addition to population and job growth, less-utilized measures will be explored to obtain a more holistic view of community and household well-being in Iowa’s small and mid-sized trade centers. Examples include measures of financial stability, business vitality, labor force utilization, poverty and income inequality, food insecurity, housing affordability, diversity, civic engagement and others.

| 11 am | Organizational Leadership and Strategy in Uncertain Times Jeremi Suri, PhD, Professor, University of Texas, Austin, TX When facing a critical situation, leaders are pressured to act quickly, often without sufficient time to fully identify and understand the context and background issues influencing the situation. Leaders who embrace history may use it in the wrong way, but those who embrace historical thinking are better prepared to foresee and strategically respond to challenges. This is particularly true in health care, where expectations for delivery are incredibly high and the pressures on cost and accountability are particularly severe.

| 2:45 pm | ACHE Panel: Improving the Health Status of Your Community Panelists
Health care organizations exist to serve the communities where they reside. Though community health has always been a focus for these organizations, new regulations require them to take an active role. The health of a community or geographic population has a critical impact on a health care organization’s planning, operations, financial sustainability, outcomes and success. As components of health care reform continue to be implemented, it remains important for hospitals to be both aware of and responsive to the health status and disease states that are most prevalent in their communities. Not only is a population-based focus the right thing to do, it may prove to be the financially astute course of action.

Keynote Speakers
Pritpal Tamber is co-founder and CEO of Bridging Health & Community, a Seattle-based nonprofit dedicated to transforming how to approach health so that it goes beyond health care and public health to include fostering the “agency” of a community. Dr. Tamber is the former physician editor of TEDMED. Through that role, he became convinced current efforts in health innovation will fail to meaningfully impact population health or health equity. Dr. Tamber is the former medical director of Map of Medicine, a company that produces clinical pathways to improve the flow of patients through health care systems. He’s also the former editorial director for Medicine for BioMed Central, the company that disrupted academic publishing by making open access commercially sustainable.
Jeremi Suri is a child of the global transformations that re-made societies in the last century, including war, migration, nation-building and mobility through higher education. His research, writing and teaching seeks to explain these transformations and their diverse origins, contradictory contours and long-lasting effects. Like other historians, Dr. Suri treats power as contingent, context-dependent and often quite elusive and like practitioners of politics, he views power as essential for any meaningful achievement, especially in the realms of social justice and democratization. Dr. Suri believes international, transnational and global history should contribute to better thinking about current international, transnational and global problems.
Liesl Eathington has worked as a research scientist in the department of economics at Iowa State University (ISU) since 1998. She coordinates the Iowa Community Indicators Program, which provides demographic and economic data for local decision-making and policy development. Eathington conducts applied research on economic trends in Iowa and the Midwest, including population growth and migration, labor force and industry composition, retail trade patterns and other indicators of regional economic health. She also provides technical assistance in support of economic development efforts by ISU’s Center for Industrial Research and Service and ISU Extension.
Cal Fussman is a New York Times bestselling author, world-renowned interviewer and corporate consultant on interviewing and storytelling. Over the last year, Fussman has delivered keynotes at dozens of companies, including Facebook, General Motors, Pixar, Twitter, Apple Music, Snapchat, Samsung, Turner Broadcasting, Vans and Lululemon as well as colleges like UCLA and Georgetown and at conferences as far as South Africa. As a writer for Esquire, ESPN, GQ, Sports Illustrated and the Washington Post Sunday Magazine, he has transformed oral history into an art form, conducting interviews with the icons who’ve shaped the last halfcentury of world history, including Mikhail Gorbachev, Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson, Jimmy Carter, Serena Williams, Ted Kennedy, Quincy Jones, Jack Welch, Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Muhammad Ali and hundreds of others. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and law degree from the New York University School of Law.
Speakers
Carisa Buegler is the director of operations at New Ulm Medical Center, a combined hospital and clinic with the Allina Health system and located in New Ulm, Minnesota. Her responsibilities include supporting outpatient departments, support services, business development and community health improvement. She has been at New Ulm Medical Center for nearly 14 years, and has 18 years of experience in program and community development, communications and marketing and strategic planning. Buegler has an undergraduate degree in family social Ssience from the University of Minnesota and a masters in health care administration from the University of Cincinnati.
Mary Lawyer is the director of community health improvement at Wellmark. Having joined Wellmark in 2015 after leading the implementation of the Iowa Blue Zones Project for Healthways, she leads the Healthy Hometown Powered by Wellmark initiative that partners with Iowa and South Dakota communities wanting to implement permanent changes to environment, policy, social networks and programs that drive well-being improvement and make the healthy choice the easy choice.
Chris McCarthy has worked at UnityPoint Health-Des Moines for 28 years and spent the last 24 years focusing on community health and engagement. Currently as a community health project manager, he works to identify community health needs and then responds to them with hospital and community partners.This has included diverse efforts ranging from access to care efforts, food insecurity and “placemaking” to support health. McCarthy has served as the chair of Healthy Polk 2020 and is a member of numerous organizations and boards focused on community health improvement. He was a 2014 Fellow in the National Leadership Academy for the Public’s Health.
Malissa Sprenger is coordinator of Mercy Turning Point Treatment Center, including Medication Assisted Treatment Services, and is the clinical opioid lead for Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque. She received her master’s degree in clinical psychology in 1995. She holds an International Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor Certification. For the past 21 years, she has worked with adolescent and adult patients presenting with multi-occurring conditions. She serves on the Iowa Board of Certification Advisory Council and is a member of Chemical Dependency Treatment Providers of Iowa.

- If registering by mail attach a copy of the registration form when payment is sent.
- No-shows will be billed.
- Cancellations and substitutions welcome anytime. All cancellations and substitution requests must be sent to Ellen Waller at iharegistration@ihaonline.org.
- A full refund will be given to all cancellations received 10 or more business days prior to the conference.
- A $50 administrative fee will be charged to all cancellations received six to nine business days prior to the conference.
- No refunds will be given to cancellations received five or fewer business days prior to the conference.
- Refunds will be calculated by the date received and the IHA business days remaining prior to the conference.
