Target Audience
Des Moines University faculty, staff, and students.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the mechanisms whereby the G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor (GPER) controls the entry of calcium into cardiovascular tissues.
- Describe the mechanisms whereby GPER controls the exit of calcium from cardiovascular tissues.
- Describe the mechanisms whereby GPER regulates calcium-dependent activities in cardiovascular tissues.
- Formulate a model whereby the G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor moderates cardiovascular functions.
Speaker
Kim Tran, MD, PhD
Associate Professor, Physiology and Pharmacology, Des Moines University
Dr. Tran received an MD from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at HoChiMinh City, followed by residency training in internal medicine and cardiology. He obtained his PhD in vascular biology and a cardiology fellowship from Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, Japan. He then pursued further postdoctoral training at the University of Missouri. Tran’s research interests include various aspects of cardiovascular pathobiology and therapeutics, particularly disorders associated with menopause, heart failure and hypertension. A current primary focus in his laboratory is the regulation of a number of G Protein-Coupled Receptors that play central roles in these conditions. Tran has published extensively in the field of cardiovascular signaling and therapeutics.
