The Research Symposium aims to recognize the research efforts of those at Des Moines University (DMU) and in the surrounding medical and scientific community by providing a forum for the collaboration of ideas, the production of new hypotheses, and to demonstrate to the attendees the critical role that research plays in the advancement of health care.

Target Audience

DMU faculty, staff, students, residents, alumni, external researchers and health professionals from the Des Moines area and surrounding medical and scientific community are invited to participate and present. All students, faculty, and residents are encouraged to develop research projects to be presented at the Symposium. 

Keynote Speaker

Joel N. Kline, MD
Professor of Medicine and Occupational and Environmental Health

Dr. Kline's research focuses on modulation of airway inflammation in asthma. Using murine models, he is investigating how DNA containing CpG motifs and other innate immune stimuli can prevent and reverse eosinophilic airway inflammation, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, and airway remodeling. As the Associate Director of the General Clinical Research Center as well as the Environmental Health Science Research Center, he also leads clinical research investigations in airway disease. Dr. Kline is the Director of the UI Adult Asthma Center, whose purpose is to integrate clinical care, clinical research, and basic research in asthma and airway inflammation.

Objectives

• Summarize the National Institute of Health mandates for Translational Research.
• Differentiate T1 Research to T2 Research which is health services research that focuses on evidence-based outcomes and compares its effectiveness.
• Update key members of the interdisciplinary research team on translational research and they'll translate this information to their respective departments and institutions.
• Review multiple research projects that are occurring in the Des Moines area.
