Objectives

• Understand the concerns involved with distance learning programs and online courses.
• Develop clear student conduct policies for managing students in an online environment.
• Understand how to better respond to cases originating from distance learning and online courses, including but not limited to cases involving threats to others, Title IX, academic integrity, and the use of types of social media to violate policy.
• Develop a system for soliciting reports of possible violations from the campus community.
• Learn strategies for effectively working with other campus entities in the handling of potential safety concerns that pose a threat to the community. 

Speakers

Ryan C. Holmes
Associate Dean of Students, Director of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution, University of Texas El Paso (UTEP)

Mr. Holmes functions as Deputy Title IX Coordinator responsible for investigating student concerns. He completed a Masters of Arts degree in Counseling and Personnel Services from the University of Maryland-College Park in 204 and as awarded a second Master’s degree (MA) in Bilingual/Bicultural Studies from La Salle University in 2008. Mr. Holmes is currently a doctoral candidate at UTEP. He has given various talks and presentations dealing with social justice, bias (as it relates to race, gender and other unchangeable traits) and entitlement, and also has publications in various areas of student affairs. Mr. Homes is also a past president of the Association for Student Conduct Administration (ASCA).

Laura Ulmer
Coordinator of Student Rights and Responsibilities, University of Louisville

Laura Ulmer has been an active member of the field of student affairs since 2005 when she began her graduate career in the College Student Personnel Program at Ohio University as a master’s student. Since 2007, Ulmer has served as the Director of Leadership and Organizational Development and Director of Academic Enrichment and Leadership at Wingate University and has served at the University of Louisville since 2010 as a member of the Dean of Students Office responsible for student conduct and crisis response. In her current role, Ulmer serves as a Title IX investigator and a 24-7 crisis responder.
