Target Audience
Healthcare providers.
Purpose
Lifestyle medicine is a term some may not know and encompasses much of what healthcare providers need to empower clients to change health behaviors. This course lays the foundation for understanding lifestyle medicine, its history, and the importance of empowering clients to move from illness to wellness.
Learning Objectives
- Identify how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Protective and Compensatory Experiences (PACEs) impact Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
- Learn how ACEs and PACEs affect pain, chronic pain, stress, and well-being.
- Review how physical health providers can integrate these psychological concepts into their clinical work.
- Cite evidence on how social media can impact the 6 Lifestyle Medicine key areas and therefore impact health.
- Review the Keirsey Temperament Model and how this can provide a framework for appreciating a variety of personality styles within clients and staff.
- Learn how these personality styles may impact behavior seen in Lifestyle Medicine.
- Identify and define the common mental health issues that can co-occur in clients treated for physical health providers.
- Learn about common mental health screening tools that can be integrated into clinical settings.
- Identify three examples of Positive Psychology and Gratitude impacting inflammation and heart disease.
- Identify evidence-based practices used to effectively treat clients experiencing co-occurring mental health issues and lifestyle-related diseases.
- Learn specific intervention strategies using evidence-based practices within your scope of practice.
- Identify the importance of personal and professional boundaries when working with clients experiencing mental health issues.
- Review self-care and self-compassion, and how practicing them helps clients reach their full potential.

Speakers

A.J. Steele, PsyD, LCADC, TPS
Vice President of Faculty Experience, Evidence In Motion
Dr. Steele's educational journey began as an art major at Manchester College in N. Manchester, IN, and continues today. She earned a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies at Manchester, with a focus on Psychology and Sport Sciences. Afterward, Dr. Steele traveled to East Lansing, MI, to attend Michigan State University and earned an MA in Health and Human Performance with an emphasis in Sport Psychology. Wanting to become a licensed psychologist, she moved to Louisville, KY, and graduated from Spalding University with an MA and PsyD in clinical psychology.

Jen Uschold, PT, CFMT, TPS, NBC-HWC
Program Director, Lifestyle Medicine, Evidence in Motion
Ms. Uschold graduated from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania and worked in a variety of physical therapy settings, including travel physical therapy, before focusing on outpatient care for the past 25 years. Her clinical approach has been strongly influenced by the Institute of Physical Art and Evidence In Motion (EIM), and she incorporates wellness coaching into her practice as a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach and Certified Positive Intelligence Coach.
Ms. Uschold actively teaches and serves with organizations including Rehab Connections, The Jackson Clinics, and the Institute of Physical Art, and currently serves on the EIM teaching team and as Program Director for the Certification in Lifestyle Medicine.
