Description
The 30-Second Patient Message course will increase the knowledge and confidence of patient care teams to address sexual health with patients in a clinical setting. In this course, we will review common side effects that impact sexual function and the sexual response cycle, and learners will develop their own 30-second patient message that all patients should hear about cancer and sexual health. The 30-Second Patient Message normalizes the conversation, enabling care teams to set patient expectations without disrupting the clinic's flow. Additionally, the course will highlight Provider communication aids and patient educational materials to assist in navigating challenges with intimacy during and after cancer treatment.
Lesson 1: Sexual Health and Its Importance in Cancer Care
- Recognize why sexual health is an essential component of comprehensive cancer care.
- Understand the course structure, expectations, and how progress will be measured.
- Complete the pre-training survey to establish a baseline of knowledge and confidence.
Lesson 2: Impacts of Treatment on Sexual Health
- Identify how common cancer treatments (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy, and targeted therapy) impact sexual health.
- Recognize common sexual health concerns and their medical management strategies.
- Develop awareness of how treatment side effects intersect with patients’ quality of life.
Lesson 3: Normalizing the Conversation
- Review national guidelines supporting sexual health as part of quality cancer care.
- Understand the “communication gap” between oncology providers and patients regarding sexual health.
- Recognize the importance of normalizing conversations to reduce stigma and support patient well-being.
Lesson 4: The 30-Second Message
- Learn the purpose and structure of the 30-Second Message for sexual health in cancer care.
- Practice using message components, lead-in lines, and patient handouts to communicate effectively.
- Gain skills for responding briefly and appropriately to patient reactions.
Lesson 5: The Referral Roadmap
- Understand when and how to refer patients for specialized sexual health services.
- Identify cancers and symptoms commonly referred for pelvic floor therapy.
- Learn how to integrate referrals into the clinic flow to better support patients.
Lesson 6: Resources
- Become familiar with available patient and provider resources for sexual health in cancer care.
- Learn how to access and share these resources effectively with patients.
- Identify tools that can save clinical time while enhancing patient support.
Lesson 7: Talking to Your LGBTQIA+ Patients
- Explore special topics, including communication with LGBTQIA+ patients and exercise in cancer survivorship.
- Learn about After Cancer’s additional services, educational materials, and continuing education opportunities.
- Provide you with optional expert videos on specific cancer types and other topics related to navigating sexual health during and after cancer treatment.
