Description
Women experience unique stroke risk factors and rehabilitation challenges due to hormonal changes, pregnancy-related conditions, and healthcare disparities. Challenges that are further amplified in rural settings. Addressing these issues requires an interprofessional education (IPE) approach to enhance awareness, collaboration, and patient outcomes.
A multidisciplinary team, including occupational therapists, physical therapists, nurses, physicians, and case managers, developed an IPE initiative to improve stroke care for women. This initiative leveraged a multi-site hybrid conference model, integrating interactive technology through iExcel’s smart wall to engage learners across Nebraska. The conference provided a collaborative, case-based learning experience focused on sex-specific stroke risks, gender-informed rehabilitation strategies, and the role of interdisciplinary teams in addressing disparities.
This initiative demonstrates how hybrid and interactive technologies can enhance interprofessional learning, particularly in rural settings where access to specialized education is limited. By integrating team-based learning and technology-driven engagement strategies, educators can better prepare future healthcare professionals to address healthcare disparities and improve patient outcomes.
Learning Objectives
- Explore the use of interactive technology and hybrid learning models in interprofessional education (IPE) for stroke care.
- Discuss strategies for overcoming barriers to implementing technology-enhanced IPE in rural healthcare education.
- Apply lessons learned from this initiative to improve their own interprofessional teaching and stroke care programs.
