Description
Literature shows that interprofessional education (IPE) promotes skill, knowledge development, cooperation, communication skills, and professional respect among allied healthcare students (Dixon et al., 2024). Faculty from an entry-level residential Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) program and an entry-level hybrid Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program designed an interactive IPE Event to promote awareness of each other’s professional roles and responsibilities. Faculty conducted a mixed-methods research project to gather student perspectives in response to the joint IPE Event. Faculty attained IRB approval from both institutions before commencing.
The authors will describe an interprofessional education (IPE) assignment and student feedback from an innovative IPE project occurring between a hybrid DPT and residential OTD program at two separate academic institutions. Faculty sought IRB approval and analyzed student feedback. Study results will be shared. Implications for fostering IPE and collaborative communication in allied health care programs will be discussed.
Learning Objectives
- Describe an innovative IPE assignment with OTD and DPT students at two separate academic institutions.
- Describe feedback from participating DPT and OTD students about their learning related to IPE and practice.
- Show the effectiveness of a single IPE event between a DPT and OTD academic program.
