Target Audience
Primary care physicians, nurses, mental health professionals, substance use disorder professionals, or clinic staff who support behavioral health services.
Purpose
Led by a panel of behavioral health experts, Behavioral Health ECHO helps participants learn best practices for treating common mental health conditions and connect with peers from around the state to discuss and learn best practices for identifying and treating behavioral health issues. The curriculum is delivered free of charge through case-based learning strategies, utilizing videoconferencing technology.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss the need for an evidence-based screening process in healthcare for substance use.
- Recognize the steps of the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) process.
- Identify the next steps for patients after implementing the SBIRT process.
Speaker

Monica Wilke-Brown, LMSW
Project Director, Iowa Department of Public Health
Ms. Wilke-Brown led the Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) grant, which integrated substance use screenings into primary care medical services. She assists with projects related to medication-assisted treatment, county substance abuse prevention, and child protection centers. Her prior experiences include volunteering for the Peace Corps, providing drug and violence prevention services, working with international students and immigrant groups, and managing non-profit organizations. She completed her bachelor’s degree at Loras College in Dubuque and her master’s degree at Washington University in St. Louis.
