The Mental Health Issues in Dependent Adults conference will be held in person at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, IA, and streamed live online via Zoom.

Purpose

This conference will provide valuable education to clinicians, caregivers, and administrators who are responsible for the care of adults who have mental and physical disabilities. There will be a special emphasis on the challenges of behavioral health management in long-term care settings.

Ethics in Real Life: When is Half a Loaf Better Than No Bread?

A case-based exploration of ethical issues involving care and decision-making around patients with reduced decisional capacity. 

  1. Name some of the key legal and ethical principles regarding patient decision-making.
  2. List strengths and limitations of these principles by applying them to concrete cases, particularly cases illustrating boundary issues.
  3. Draw specific ethical principles (such as respect for autonomy, integrity, honesty, justice, and selflessness) out of concrete ethical cases and explain how they apply. 
  4. Address some of the challenges around balancing patient safety and autonomy.
  5. Explain some of the (problematic) history of the “difficult patients” literature and some strategies for working with such patients.
  6. Name additional principles around considering accepting decisions from cognitively aware but non-decisional patients.

    The Iowa Veterans Home is at 1301 Summit Street, Marshalltown, Iowa. Individuals should enter at the West Entrance, west of the corner of 13th Street and Summit. On the map below, this is shown as Independence Road. Go to the far north end of the entrance road and turn right into the large parking lot. The conference will be held in Whitehill Auditorium (Building #10 on the map). Handicapped parking is available across the street south of the cottages (#11), in the southeast corner of the lot immediately north of the cottages (#11), and in the gift shop parking lot.
